Escaped LGA dog rescued from Flushing Bay

LAGUARDIA AIRPORT — At about 2 p.m. Tuesday, a rare breed of dog — perro de presa canario — escaped from the cargo hold of a Continental Airlines plane at LaGuardia Airport, according to a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey.

The dog had been in a kennel on a flight from Houston to New York. The Port Authority tried to capture the dog as it ran around the runways.

“The dog eventually jumped into Flushing Bay,” said spokesman Spencer Schrage, who said the pup was rescued by the NYPD Harbor Unit and returned to Continental personnel.

As of Tuesday evening, officials at Continental planned to return the dog to its owners.
