Eatery gives Whitestone dash of Greece

Eatery gives Whitestone dash of Greece

When Michael Arapos and his business partner, Nick Condomanolis, decided to open up a new Greek restaurant, they wanted to go to a neighborhood where the Mediterranean menu was not common.

Since opening up Tasty Grill at 14-22 150th St. in Whitestone in September, dozens of customers have come into the eatery to keep discovering some of the many dishes offered by the cooks, according to Arapos.

“For us, we felt that there weren’t that many Greek restaurants around here,” he said.

Tasty Grill offers a wide variety of Greek and American choices on its menu. From mozzarella sticks to charcoal grilled chicken breast, the eatery gives large servings for low prices.

Arapos, a Greek American from Astoria, said the grill’s speciality is in its gyros. Unlike other restaurants, Tasty Grill offers the popular dish in beef, pork and chicken varieties and they are cooked in a rotisserie style.

“People here are really getting themselves familiarized with what we offer,” he said.

For beverages, Arapos said he has several imported ales from Europe, including Augustiner Bräu and Weihenstephaner from Germany.

The decor transports eaters to the European country, with photos of the Greek countryside and music from that nation playing through speakers. The restaurant also offers an outdoor patio area in its rear, which has become popular among patrons during the summer, Arapos said.

Arapos said the summer season has brought in more customers and they like the food so much that they bring their friends, too.

“We’ve got a lot of returning customers,” he said.
