A Jamaica Hills man was shot and killed in South Richmond Hill around 6:40 a.m. Sunday in what could have been a robbery gone wrong, police and neighbors said.

Barri Jahoor, 35, was shot multiple times in the stomach at the intersection of 135th Street and Liberty Avenue, police said. Minutes after police responded to the shooting, they received information that a 34-year-old man had walked to Jamaica Hospital with gunshot wounds to his torso. Police believe this incident is related to the shooting involving Jahoor.

Police have not identified the 34-year-old, but did say he was in stable condition at Jamaica Hospital. No arrests had been made as of Tuesday.

“This is not a good place to be,” one resident said of the South Richmond Hill neighborhood where she has lived for eight years. “A lot of bad stuff happens, especially when it gets dark out. There’s a lot of gunshots and you don’t even flinch anymore when you hear it. You get scared, especially for all the people who have kids.”

Neighbors heard more than a dozen gunshots Sunday morning, according to one man who declined to give his name. A woman who lives in the neighborhood said she heard that Jahoor was shot during a robbery, but did not know any specifics.

The corner where Jahoor, a cab driver and welder originally from Trinidad and Tobago, died is already the site of two street memorials, one that local residents said was for a man nicknamed “Magus” who was shot and another for someone killed in a motorcycle accident.

At the home in Jamaica Hills that police listed as Jahoor’s address, a man who said he was a family friend of the victim said Jahoor was a good person.

“He was friendly,” said the man, who did not want to give his name.
