St. John’s Haiti relief team plans fund-raiser in Manhattan
By Anna Gustafson

The relief team traveling to Haiti from St. John’s University’s Center for Global Development will hold a fund-raiser at Pop Burger in Manhattan Jan. 19. The event will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the restaurant, located at 58-60 Ninth Ave. Tickets will be $25 and cover food and drink.

The CGD’s director of programming, Kevin Jamison, of Kew Gardens, said they are hoping to raise both money and receive items like blankets, water and canned goods for the trip that will last from Jan. 26 to Feb. 3. Jamison will remain in Haiti indefinitely.

People traveling to Haiti as part of the St. John’s team include doctors and nurses from throughout the United States. They will be bringing medicine, food, water and other items to Haiti.

The following items are being asked for as donations: money, sheets, blankets, towels, tents, tarps, candles, flashlights, matches, lighters, lanterns and lantern oil, bandages, gauze, soap, baby diapers, canned food that has tab openings and does not require can openers, energy bars and bottled water.

Jamison asked that donations be placed in boxes or sturdy plastic bags. Those donating are being asked to mark what is inside the box or bag.
