Flushing woman plans run for lung cancer awareness

A Flushing woman who ran in the Philadelphia Marathon after having lost her father to lung cancer will host information sessions in Bayside, College Point and Astoria this month on how to train for the race.

Carrie Wesolowski, who lives in Flushing near the Bayside border, said she is attempting to recruit a team of runners for Team Lung Love, a charity group running in the Philadelphia Marathon, for this year’s race.

The first information session will be held Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Bay Terrace Library at 18-36 Bell Blvd., while the second will take place Aug. 8 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Poppenhusen Institute at 114-04 14th Road in College Point. A third session will be held Aug. 21 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Astoria Library at 40-20 Broadway.

“I ran in the first marathon to bring attention to lung cancer,” Wesolowski said. “I could use my experience to mentor people since I’ve been through this before.”

Wesolowski is encouraging people of all ages to join her for the run. She would train them for several months leading up to the Nov. 21 marathon.

Her father died last year from stage 4 lung cancer at age 66. In May, she ran in the inaugural Team Lung Love marathon in Providence, R.I.

To RSVP for the information sessions, e-mail teamlunglove2@gmail.com.

“Team Lung Love is a great way for survivors and anyone who’s been touched by lung cancer to feel like they’re doing something about this disease,” said Julie Gaynor, the team’s national coordinator.
