Bronx man stole keys to Sears jewelry display: DA

REGO PARK — A Bronx man allegedly stole a set of keys off a jewelry display counter at a Sears department store in Rego Park, then returned two weeks later to attempt to access the jewelry inside, according to the Queens district attorney’s office.

A Sears store security officer said he observed Ramon Velez, 41, take the keys from a counter Jan. 16, the DA’s office said.

The officer said Velez returned Jan. 31 at about 3:30 p.m. and leaned over a counter, tried to put the key in the lock and attempted to open the jewelry case, the DA’s office said.

Velez was apprehended and when he was searched a set of keys was found, which the officer said match the stolen keys, the DA’s office said.

Velez is charged with petit larceny and fifth-degree possession of stolen property, the DA said..
