City must back new teacher contract

It is unfair that the teachers of the New York City public school system are still without a new contract. Teachers are still working under the old contract, which expired Oct. 31, 2009.

Why is the city Department of Education and Mayor Michael Bloomberg being so unprofessional in their dealings with the United Federation of Teachers? It is time for all of the hardworking, dedicated teachers in our city public school system to receive a fair and livable contract.

Teachers, like all of the other city, public and private employees, have to pay bills, put food on the table and pay taxes. Let us have a new contract that is fair and affordable for the teachers — now.
