ARVERNE — An Arverne man was sentenced last week to 21 years in prison for raping two women at gunpoint during two separate incidents in the Rockaways in 2009.
Malcolm Johnson, 25, of 146 Beach 59th St. in Arverne, pleaded guilty last month to two counts of first-degree rape before Queens Supreme Court Justice Richard L. Buchter, who passed down the sentence May 5.
Johnson approached a 25-year-old woman from behind while she walked along the street at about 3:10 a.m. Oct. 27, 2009, jumped in front of her and pointed a handgun at her. He told her she would not be harmed if she cooperated, then dragged her to the back of a church parking lot, at 330 Beach 67th St., and demanded her money and cell phone, according to Queens District Attorney Richard Brown’s office.
She gave him $15 and said she did not have a cell phone, the DA said. Johnson then told her to take off her clothes and then put on latex gloves and a condom and raped her, according to the DA.
The following day at 5:15 a.m., he approached a 21-year-old woman, grabbed her arm and pointed a gun at her. He led her at gunpoint to 364 Beach 56th St., where he took her into the elevator and went to the roof landing where he told her to take off her pants, then proceeded to put on latex gloves and rape her. He then grabbed her pocketbook, which contained cash, a bank card and personal papers and fled the scene, according to the DA.
Brown said a condom found a block away from the Oct. 27 crime scene contained DNA evidence that matched both the victim and Johnson. His DNA was already in the state DNA database because he had to submit a DNA sample after being convicted in 2005 of attempted criminal possession of a weapon, the DA said.
“As a result of the DNA match in this case, the defendant pleaded guilty and today was sentenced to a lengthy term behind bars,” Brown said in a statement.
