Flushing fire dishes out double dose of heat

Firefighters who responded to a blaze on the third floor of a Flushing apartment building Wednesday afternoon also had to contend with the hot weather. The National Weather Service had issued a heat advisory for Wednesday for New York City with temperatures predicted to near 100 in the mid and late afternoon.

“It’s just a terribly hot day to do this in,” said FDNY Capt. Paul Smith from Engine 274, one of 12 units with more than 60 firefighters to respond to the Flushing fire at 42-40 Bowne St.

According to fire officials, a call came in about the fire at 1:14 p.m., and the blaze was under control at 1:50 p.m. They were working to determine the cause.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan, fire officials said.
