Thrift Shop Has Big Heart

In 2011, there is evidence that autistic children can benefit dramatically from early intervention. But this intervention requires close attention by dedicated professionals, especially in the more difficult cases. This can be expensive.

For this reason, we salute The Heart & Home Thrift Store, at 92-17 165th St., which has formed a partnership with Tender Care Services, a Jamaica nonprofit that helps autistic children. Heart & Home will be donating the profits from some of the sales of clothes to fund one of Tender Care’s most popular programs.

The director at Tender Care said the music and art therapy program is at risk because the funding is not what it used to be. The program helps children learn a musical instrument and use music to express themselves.

Tender Care members who have developmental disabilities serve as volunteers at the shop. On Sept. 14, Tender Care will be holding a fashion forward show at La Bella Cucina Ristorante in Middle Village and all proceeds will go to the music program.

Tender Care and Heart & Home deserve the community’s gratitude for coming up with this arrangement. There is evidence that with early intervention some people have been able to overcome the effects of autism and go on to lead independent lives.

The Downfall of Anthony Weiner

Is it possible to be saddened by the downfall of U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner without in any way excusing his conduct? Is it possible a person could engage in unsavory conduct while in other ways serving his constituents well in Congress? We think so and admit we were not happy to watch Weiner’s resignation, even though we agree it was the right thing to do.

As everyone in America knows, the man who might have been the next mayor of New York City resigned in shame last week following revelations that he had sent lewd photographs over the Internet and engaged in sexual conversations with a number of women using his Twitter account. The scandal grew by the day and in the end fellow Democrats — even the president — believed he should step down. It will be a long time before Weiner is taken seriously on any subject.
