TimesLedger to sit in on congressional debate

The Queens Civic Congress will host a debate Monday, Aug. 22, at 7:30 p.m. between the two congressional candidates — state Assemblyman David Weprin (D-Little Neck) and retired businessman Bob Turner, a Republican from Rockaway  — vying for the 9th Congressional District left vacant by ex-U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner.

The debate will be held at the Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills, and will be moderated by former Community Board Chairman Richard Hellenbrect.

TimesLedger Newspapers will sit on a panel along with two other news organizations who will question the two candidates on multiple issues, which could include Medicare, Social Security, current affairs in Israel and the Middle East as well as the state of Jamaica Bay.

Central Queens will be crucial to the race, according to Pat Dolan, president of the congress, owing to the fact that residents there vote in large numbers, even for special elections.

The event is open to the public.
