Sullivan puts Bayside in spotlight

Bayside now has its own channel and Gregg Sullivan is its cameraman.

The former executive director of the Bayside Village Business Improvement District has crafted a micro-market television channel and has big ambitions to service and entertain the community on a local level.

“This is a game-changer,” Sullivan said. “And what’s best is that we’re first. There’s no second place for Bayside.”

BaysideLiveTV is dedicated to providing local residents with an inside look at their community through the eyes of neighbors. Sullivan said it was an inevitable step in television and was undoubtedly in the pipeline for neighborhoods throughout the region.

While still in its infancy, Sullivan said the locally focused neighborhood channel was the next big step in Bayside history.

“It’s starting now. This is going to be forever,” Sullivan said. “This content will be incredibly valuable in the future.”

With a lengthy résumé in broadcast and television experience, Sullivan said it was a no-brainer to give Baysiders a look in the mirror. His latest venture seeks to cover local sports, music and even birthday parties.

Sullivan said he was always on-call to grab his camera and run outside to shoot the next story.

“I’m the full production team,” Sullivan said. “There have been times where I had the camera in one hand and the lighting in the other.”

On any given day, Sullivan can be seen on the streets between Northern Boulevard and 35th Avenue documenting Bayside in its simplest day-to-day forms. From the growth of Giants fans along Bell Boulevard as their team progressed to the Super Bowl to the local chili cook-off, Sullivan is out focusing on people.

Bayside’s Michael Caponsacco was featured on BaysideLiveTV in a video covering the chili cook-off at CJ Sullivan’s on 41st Avenue.

He said the channel was a much-needed asset in his town.

“We have to push these kinds of things,” Caponsacco said. “We grew up here and it’s nice to have that sense of community through these videos.”

Sullivan added that part of his marketing strategy was through neighbor connections. Once Caponsacco saw himself in the video, he then shared it with his neighbors. Once viewers can tag themselves in seven of BaysideLiveTV’s videos, Sullivan will buy them dinner and shoot a story on the winner or a cause of their choice.

Sullivan posts his videos online at baysidelivetv.com and said it was a medium that the typical public access channel did not offer. Though he admitted to believing in public access television, Sullivan said there was no commerce connection.

He classified much of BaysideLiveTV’s style under the title of “documercial.”

“It’s a documercial on steroids,” Sullivan said. “We’re promoting, serving and covering Bayside and the whole town is getting an upgrade.”
