State Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside) honored PS 159 in Bayside with a Senate resolution last week to celebrate its designation as a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.
The Senate unanimously passed the resolution and recognized the school for having students with high levels of standards and excellence, Avella’s office said. Each year since 1982, the city Department of Education has sought out schools where students sustain high academic goals as part of the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program.
Under Principal Paul Didio, PS 159 has been able to achieve such an honor through its emphasis on building a positive school climate and culture as it progresses toward and builds upon its high expectations for its students, staff and community, Avella’s office said.
Avella met with Didio and Assistant Principle Andrew Pecorella to present the school with the resolution Monday.
