Human remains found near LaGuardia: Port Authority

EAST ELMHURST – Human remains were discovered in the marshes near LaGuardia Airport Monday evening, a Port Authority spokesman confirmed.

“The location is right at the water’s edge on Rikers Island Channel, which is part of Flushing Bay,” said PA spokesman Al Della Fave.

Della Fave said that airport workers routinely clear foliage from the shores of LaGuardia for security purposes.

“They noted weeds right at the shore line were getting kind of high,” he said, explaining that the remains were discovered at about 6:20 p.m.

Because of the rising tide, the remains had to removed quickly, and members of the NYPD and city medical examiner’s office also searched the area for related items, the spokesman said.

Della Fave said that the medical examiner’s office confirmed to the Port Authority that the remains were human but did not yet release any information about the gender or cause of death.

The investigation is ongoing, he said.

“Port Authority detectives are reviewing local law enforcement missing person cases to see if there is any connection,” Della Fave said.
