ROCKAWAY — New York Police Department divers teamed up with the U.S. Coast Guard and other emergency responders to rescue an unidentified man trapped underneath a capsized boat near Rockaway Beach, police said.

According to the New York Post, the unidentified man was fishing with three men and two children around 10:45 a.m. before their boat capsized. The passengers were pulled from the water by nearby boaters, while the unidentified man, in his 50s, remained underwater, the Post said.

With help from the Coast Guard and the Nassau County Police Department, the NYPD was able to retrieve the missing man from underneath the 20-foot boat after several minutes underwater, police said.

The man was airlifted to Staten Island University Hospital, placed on a ventilator and listed in critical but stable condition, the Post said. The others were treated for minor injuries.
