The New York Police Department was asking for the public’s help in finding a suspect wanted for an attempted rape within the 111th Precinct, police said.

According to police, the suspect attempted to rape a 17-year-old woman Aug. 21 around 10:30 p.m. at Peck Park in Fresh Meadows, where the Bayside Little League holds some games. The suspect approached the victim, knocked her to the ground and then tried to rape her, the NYPD said.

Police said the victim kicked the man in the chest and was able to flee the scene without any major injury.

Police described the suspect as a white man between the ages of 40 and 50 and around 225 pounds. He also spoke with an Eastern European accent, police said.

According to the 111th Precinct’s crime statistics, there have been two rapes as of Sept. 30, 2012, compared to a total of four reported by that time in 2011. A total of six rapes were reported in the 111th Precinct in 2011.

As of Sept. 30, 2012, rapes have accounted for less than 1 percent of overall crime this year in the 111th Precinct, according to crime statistics. In both 2011 and 2012 to date, rapes were the second least-reported crimes in the precinct, second only to murder.

The NYPD asked that anyone with information about the suspect to call the Crime Stoppers hot line at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), visit the Crime Stoppers website at nypdcrimestoppers.com or to text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and then enter TIP577.
