U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-Jackson Heights) was elected last Thursday to serve as vice chairman of the Democratic Caucus in the House of Representatives. The new position will make Crowley the fifth-ranked member among House Democrats.

Crowley thanked his colleagues for electing him in a statement and praised former Democratic Vice Chairman Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.).

“A new Congress gives us a fresh chance to present our ideas for the nation, and I am eager to get to work alongside Leader [Nancy] Pelosi, Whip [Steny] Hoyer, Assistant Leader [Jim] Clyburn, and Caucus Chairman [Xavier] Becerra as we fight to advance an agenda focused on promoting economic growth, creating jobs, strengthening and expanding America’s middle class and building a better, stronger country for all Americans,” Crowley said.

The congressman was nominated to his position by Rep.-Elect Grace Meng (D-Flushing), as well as Reps. Charles Rangel (D-Manhattan) and Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) and Rep.-Elect Joaquin Castro (D-Texas).

Crowley, who has been in office since 1999, served as a Democratic chief deputy whip since 2003.
