One important issue that needs to be dealt with as soon as possible is to putting utility lines underground so damage to electrical, phone and cable service will be significantly reduced during future storms.
Hurricane Sandy caused massive and widespread destruction of power poles and utility lines, and the cost to repair this destruction is going to be in the millions. It will be an expensive and herculean task, but it is one that needs to be done.
Also, regular annual maintenance on trees needs to be done. No trees should be planted near power poles and utility lines. We must be better prepared for the next intense storm and now, not later, is the time to do these important and necessary tasks.
