Dorothy Hyland, of Ocean Grove N.J., and a former longtime Little Neck resident, died Sept. 21. She was 84.
Born in College Point, she made her home and raised her family in Little Neck from 1957-2007 before moving to the Manor by the Sea nursing home in Ocean Grove, where she was near her daughter, youngest son and five of her grandchildren.
Hyland was involved in and left a mark on every community she called home. In College Point, she was involved with St. Fidelis Church and School and belonged to the local Oscar Ammann Post of the American Legion Auxiliary, a membership that was active for decades after she left town.
In Little Neck, she was a major lay force in the local parish, St. Anastasia. She put her experience as a teacher at the church’s disposal by running the CCD program, as well as participating in the parish Liturgy Committee. She put her gifts for art and sewing to use, ensuring the church was always decorated with beautiful banners at every occasion. Her ability as a seamstress was reflected in the costuming for parish plays and other community theater productions. She ran the church youth group every summer for nearly two decades.
She is predeceased by her husband John J. Hyland and two of her sons, Eugene and William Hyland, in infancy. She is survived by four children; 11 grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and countless friends.
Visiting will be Sunday, Sept. 29, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Doyle B. Shaffer Funeral Home in Little Neck. A funeral mass will be held Mon., Sept. 30, at 9:45 a.m. in St. Anastasia Church in Douglaston.
Interment will follow in Calverton National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, which Dorothy supported regularly for more than 50 years.
