Ex-Jamaica Hospital EMT murdered wife: Post

RICHMOND HILL — A former EMT who worked at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center was convicted of murdering his wife and torching their Sullivan County home by an upstate jury last week, the New York Post reported.

Ex-city EMT Paul Novak strangled his wife, chloroformed her and set fire to the couple’s house in 2008, a jury found, although his EMT training helped him elude authorities for years after he collected an $800,000 life insurance policy and moved to Florida with his mistress, the Post said.

That mistress eventually became Novak’s ex-girlfriend, who testified against the father of two along with a former coworker at Jamaica Hospital. Their testimony was key to the guilty verdict, the Post reported.

Novak faces up to life in prison when sentenced.
