Scherie Murray, the Republican candidate vying for the City Council’s District 31 seat in southeast Queens, accepted a nomination from the fire marshals’ union during Fire Prevention Week.

“There are many things we can cut spending on in this city, but public safety is not one of them, and as your City Council member, I will ensure that does not happen,” Murray said Oct. 9.

“In the event of another tragedy like Superstorm Sandy, one of the many things that we need to do is make all our structures as secure and resistant to fire as possible,” she continued. “The fire marshals lead us in that effort and I am proud to be working with them.”

Murray is facing off against Councilman Donovan Richards (D-Laurelton) in the Nov. 5 general election for the district covering Laurelton, Rosedale, Springfield Gardens and Far Rockaway.

William Kregler, president of the Fire Marshal Benevolent Association, praised Murray’s “strong work ethic” in endorsing her candidacy.

“Scherie is tired of the lack of improvement and representation in the community by her elected officials,” he said. “Instead of shouting from the crowds, Scherie has stepped up to take on the task of properly representing the southeast district.”
