Two Crips get 50 years each in 13-year old’s death

The two Queens Crips members whose gang shootout caught 13-year-old Kevin Miller in its deadly crossfire as he was walking home from school three years ago were each sentenced to 50 years in prison Wednesday, the Queens district attorney said.

Miller, a beloved youngster who was a member of Jamaica’s New Jerusalem Baptist Church, was going for a snack at McDonald’s one afternoon in October 2009 after school let out at the Campus Magnet Complex in Cambria Heights.

Crips members Gregory Calas, 21, and 19-year-old Nnonso Ekwegbalu were involved in an altercation with rival Bloods gang members, Brown said.

Ekwegbalu pulled out a revolver and fired at three unarmed gang members who were running away, but his stray bullet struck Miller in the head and ended his short, young life, Brown said.

Another stray bullet hit 17-year-old Pedro Garcia in the leg as he was working at a nearby car wash, the DA added.

After a six-week trial last year, Calas and Ekwegbalu were convicted in November.

On Wednesday, Queens Supreme Court Justice Gregory Lasak sentenced both men to 50 years in prison, terms Brown said were more than fitting.

“Without the slightest regard for human life, the defendants recklessly turned the streets of Queens County into a deadly battleground that claimed the life of an innocent young student walking home from school and wounded a second hardworking teenager,” Brown said. “The lengthy prison sentence imposed today is more than justified and sends a strong message to others who might think of resorting to gunfire to settle disputes.”

Miller’s mother, Donna Hood, has since become an active voice in the gun violence discussion. Earlier this year, state Sen. Malcolm Smith (D-St. Albans) paid tribute to her by dedicating to her part of the Senate’s historic gun control legislation that increases penalties for gun possession.

Calas was convicted of first-degree manslaughter, second-degree attempted murder, assault and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

Ekwegbalu — whose case was heard by a separate jury — was convicted of first-degree manslaughter, assault and one count of criminal possession of a weapon.

I blame these disgusting gangs who instead of getting up in the morning and find a better solution to their poverIshed lIfe. Stricker and long term sentences for carrying an unlicensed gun can curb some of the vIolence. Something has to be done with these gangs. The punks who call themselves bloods and crips, really do get full of blood when they shoot each other up and the crips are really that crippled. They are crippled mentally. They have no education and they are punks to hurt innocent people because they refuse to go to a regular 9-5. I believe if you shoot and kill someone, there should be no deals and give them lifewhy should you get paroled and live your life while the person you kill is dead? The Gang Units. Of the NYPD and tackle this or I suggest you get the troops out here.

Commisionar Kelly, please help dismantle the crIps and the bloods. NY is turning into Afghanistan. It's not fare that inocent people have to lose their lives because these gangs only want to take from you and they don't care who dies. They deserved more than 50 years. Why didn't they get life? Why should they get to eat three meals a day with the possibility of getting out someday, when someone as precious as s child, is lying 6 feet under?

Mr. President Obama, if you ever read this, please help me and my family and many other families, to live a safe life without killings everyday. We need more than just the NYPD. We need troops. Being the sister of a 5 time deployment officer from The Army's Special OP unit, I pray we can live a life not like Afghanistan. It's traumatizing living in NY for me. I have lived here all my life. From Son of Sam to World Trade Center disaster. Living in the projects of South Jamaica is a war zone. Someone dies every year. Guns are every where here. I suggest you pass a law that gives life to anyone who intentionally kills someone. No negotiations. Also stiffer penalties and more jail time if caught with a gun. This gun violence has all to do with drugs and gangs. Please President Obama help take control of our streets and our country. I don't want my children to die!!

Sara: You are right but they got something on them, otherwise why would they get 50 years? Sooner or later the truth comes out and with high technology today, it's hard to get away from that plus you have witnesses who will talk. Read the laws of. NY and educate yourself Sara. It doesn't matter if you pulled the trigger, all who were there and participated or just witnessed it will get as much jail time as if they pulled the trigger. That's how it works. You make me sick with that stupid comment. Get an education and learn something instead of bang ganging with people who this article is about.

Donte care, your attitude was unnecessary sara was just stating her opinion. And no they dont have evidence, they never retrieved the weapon or weapons and witness testimony can be coerced and falsified. Truth is the media will put out there what they want you to believe. Its up to us as people to read between the lines and find the real facts. You can't take anything for face value anymore. The fact that the prosecutor had to pull on heart strings and base his case on witness testimony should tell you something. Mix that with the pressure of uneducated activists and court appointed lawyer's and there you have it 50 years in prison.States problem now. Its actually pretty sad.

Thank god these fools are put away for life. Sad to see these guys are pretty young and threw their lives away for a crip flag that doesn't even care about them. 50 years I bet not one crip will come put money on their books or write a single letter. Let this be a lesson to all of the young gang bangers you're playing Russian roulette with your life.

No they didn't find the gun but they had plenty of evidence to support the guilty verdict they received....and Sara Yea your just dumb because you have absolutely no respect for the love ones of Kevin do your research before you start flapping your gums seriously. They got Exactly what they deserved and I personally don't think 50yrs was enough justice! R.I.P Kevin

Nnonso is inoccent he just had to take the blame because of his gang if he didn't and snitched on who really did hed be dead and his family would be too c'mon this is like gang influence 101 and I went to school with him I know this for a fact that school was right in the middle of crip gang activity you couldn't even go to the store with out looking over your shoulder that's why some kids joined the gang so they can not be victims in hopes of safety bad choice but what you gonna do kids make bad decisions and even if he did snitch there still would be a chance he would go to jail where crips are and they'd know he snitched and he
Get killed so like I don't know what else to say but I know he's inoccent

Your attitude is a bit crazy. Christine only stated hef opinion and quite frankly shes right. If you believe our justic system is systematically set up corr segregation and biased convictions then you are just as naive as an infant. How is someone judged by a jury of their peers but all of the jury was a certain age and had certain characteristics I.e. older women, hildrinr around 13/14. Its not hard to recieve the judgement u want.unfortunately this is a case of lazy police work, ignorant and arrogant african american males and a dead child. With all the cameras on that corner no one finds it odd there is no footage to show. They show all the other cases footage, play 911 calls and all types of interviews but on a busy strip in a decent area where there are at least 7 cameras we have no footage.smh
March 13, 6:55 pm
bklynbeauty from Queens Village says:
@Picassoc who said it wasn't any camera footage? Who said it wasn't a mixed jury? Did you attend the trial because you seem to have all the answers but really you don't know anything your assuming and you shouldn't!
March 13, 7:58 pm
piccassoc from queens village says:
I wouldnt speak on what I dont know. If u must know I know both gentleman. I have been to the trial so dont think I'm assuming because u wish I was. Unfortunately regardless of all the back and forth one child is dead, his killer is still loose and two young men are in prison. And I didnt mean there was absolutely no footage. I mean it wasnt in the media.
