Far Rock man sentenced to 54 years in stabbing of NYPD sergeant: DA

FAR ROCKAWAY — A Far Rockaway man was sentenced to 54 years to life in prison last week for the attempted murder of a police sergeant and for assaulting two other officers, the Queens district attorney said.

Neil Perreira, 39, of 24-50 Collier Ave., had been held in jail since his arrest in January 2009, when the DA said he stabbed Sgt. Timothy Smith in the chest and eye when he responded to a 911 call about Perreira being armed with a knife at his home.

The DA’s office said two other officers were also injured trying to subdue Perreira.

Perreira was convicted in February of first-degree attempted murder, aggravated assault on a police officer, assault on a police officer and two counts of second-degree assault, according to the borough’s top prosecutor.
