Weprin seeks to protect carriages

By Kelsey Durham

State Assemblyman David Weprin (D-Fresh Meadows) has introduced a bill aimed at protecting the city’s horse carriage industry by stopping the city from lowering the number of permits it issues this year.

The bill also prohibits the city from raising the fee to apply for a carriage permit.

Weprin said he is in favor of keeping the industry alive, despite the campaign launched by Mayor Bill de Blasio to put an end to the practice that he says is dangerous for the animals.
