A 70-year-old man was killed in what authorities described as a small explosion in his Kew Gardens apartment Monday night.

A spokesman for the NYPD said the blast took place at about 6:30 p.m. and its cause was unknown as of 10 p.m.

A Fire Department spokesman said the man went into cardiac arrest shortly after emergency responders arrived and he was pronounced dead in the apartment on Austin Street between Lefferts Boulevard and 82nd Drive.

Police said the 70-year-old sustained a massive injury to his head.

The city’s medical examiner would determine if the unidentified senior’s death was an accident or a suicide, the NYPD spokesman said, adding that investigators did not believe foul play by another person was involved.
