Platforms at five A train stations to be refurbished in Ozone Park

By Philip Newman

Three months of work is under way to modernize and spruce up platforms of two A train stations in Ozone Park, which may complicate commutes this summer but result in a permanent benefit for straphangers.

Queens-bound platforms at the 88th Street and 104th Street stations along Liberty Avenue were shut down May 12 for the $39 million project, with the job scheduled to be completed by Aug. 18.

In the meantime, regular Manhattan-bound A train service will be available.

The project involves five stations, including those at Rockaway Boulevard and 80th and 111th streets, with work on them tentatively scheduled for September.

The undertaking includes repairs of mezzanines-to-platform stairways, mezzanine floors, doors and windows as well as interior and exterior walls. The stations will be painted and canopies, windscreen panels and railings are to be replaced. New lighting will also be installed along with enhanced safety features and communications.

Following the finish of the first phase of the project, work will move to the Manhattan-bound platforms at the 88th Street and 104th Street stations.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials expressed appreciation to subway riders for their patience during work on the improvements and recommended consulting Trip Planner at mta.info for help in traveling while construction goes on.
