Mayor says he’s not interested in bringing Olympics to NYC

By Bill Parry

Mayor Bill de Blasio Friday put the brakes on any talk of bringing the 2024 Olympic Games to New York City.

Asked at a news conference in Queens Village about why he was opposed to mounting a bid for the Games, de Blasio said, “Look everyone’s noticed that we have a vigorous agenda here already. I’ve talked to others who tell how the Olympics have taken away from their plans with a lot of hidden costs.”

He went on to say that “many cities use the Olympics to brand themselves or rebrand like Putin” in a jab at the president of Russia, which just hosted the Winter Olympics.

“But we’re New York and we don’t need to do that,” de Blasio said.

The mayor made his comments after touring the A to Z Center in Queens Village, where he announced the creation of more than 10,000 new full-day. pre-K seats at community-based early childhood centers in every borough.
