NYPD nabs over 1,000 in speeding initiative

QUEENS — Police slapped 1,219 Queens drivers with speeding summonses in a two-day enforcement blitz in May.

The initiative was part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Vision Zero policy to reduce traffic and pedestrian fatalities. It started May 20 at midnight and ran for 48 hours.

Queens had the second most summonses in the city during the initiative. Only Brooklyn had more with 1,249.

The NYPD reminded the public studies have shown pedestrians struck by cars traveling at 40 miles per hour have an 85 percent chance of dying. That likelihood drops to 45 percent when the car is travelling 30 mph, police said.

Fines for speeding range from $90 to $600 and penalties vary from 3 to 11 license points, depending on the severity of the infraction.
