New library site will circulate books

Many thanks to TimesLedger Newspapers for issuing a correction to Tom Allon’s Jan. 3-9 column and clarifying that books are central to the design and programming of the New York Public Library’s new branch on 53rd Street in Manhattan.

The new library — which will be one of the largest branches in the NYPL system — will indeed have a robust circulating collection of books and other materials available for checkout by users.

More broadly, public space at NYPL is increasing. Last month, NYPL opened our sixth new branch since 2005 in Mariners Harbor, S.I., setting a new high water mark for the number of branches in our network, at 88.

Most importantly, we agree with Allon that the future of our city demands all of New York’s neighborhoods have strong branch libraries.
