Meng passes first law

By Alex Robinson

U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Flushing) saw her first bill signed into law by President Barack Obama this week.

The freshman congresswoman’s law will expand the International Religious Freedom Act, which defines violations of religious freedoms to include the desecration of cemeteries around the world.

“This new law makes it clear that our society will not tolerate the desecration of cemeteries whether motivated by anti-Semitism, hate or greedy and uncaring developers,” Meng said. “It will be a new and critical tool to combat the desecration of cemeteries and provide a much-needed boost towards promoting preservation, tolerance and respect for cemeteries across the globe.”

Meng first introduced the law, called the Protect Cemeteries Act, in February.
