Free screenings at Jamaica health expo

By Juan Soto

Hundreds of people are expected to participate Sunday in the annual End It Now walk and health expo, an initiative that seeks to create new policies to better protect women and girls.

The Sunday walk is scheduled to start at 9 a.m., while the expo to begin at 12 p.m., according Mireille St. Pierre, women’s ministries director at Northeastern Conference, a religious nonprofit organization.

Neighbors from Jamaica, St. Albans, Springfield Gardens, Rochdale, South Ozone Park, South Jamaica and Queens Village will participate in the event that will take place at 115-50 Merrick Blvd.

The End It Now walk began as a campaign to collect 1 million signatures to present to the United Nations “to raise additional awareness about the issue and to advocate for the creation of effective new policies that protect women and girls,” said St. Pierre.

She added that efforts are continuing “because we did not reach our objectives yet.”

During the Northeastern Conference Annual Health Expo, experts will offer free cholesterol and blood pressure screenings as well as nutrition information, cooking demonstrations and anti-stress massages.

“The health expo is important because a natural health educator will screen people to detect possible chronic health issues,” said St. Pierre.
