Marshals take drug smuggler into custody

SPRINGFIELD GARDENS — U.S. marshals were shot at as they were trying to arrest a drug smuggler in a home in Springfield Gardens on the night of Aug. 26.

The marshals returned fire, injuring the suspect in the hand.

It all started when federal authorities broke down a door at a home, at 175th Street and 144th Drive, at approximately 11 p.m.

When the gunfire exchange cleared, the fugitive, also wanted for an assault in Brooklyn, surrendered after tossing his gun.

NYPD detectives were at the scene as backups.

The suspect, whose identity was not immediately released, was wearing a bulletproof vest.

No cops or marshals were injured during the incident.
