Weekend service on No. 7 line shut down for most of western Queens

by Bill Parry

Service on the No. 7 subway line will be shut down in most of western Queens this weekend as the MTA continues track replacement and upgrades on its signal system. Beginning Saturday at 2 a.m. through 4:30 a.m. Monday the train will be closed in both directions from 74th Street-Broadway in Jackson Heights to Times Square.

“The ongoing work on the 7 remains absolutely critical to this line’s reliability, safety and longevity,” MTA NYC Transit President Carmen Bianco said. “We understand that these service disruptions are inconvenient to the customers who depend on the 7 train and we appreciate their patience.”

Shuttle buses will operate along two routes: Between Vernon Boulevard-Jackson Avenue and Queens Plaza, making stops at Hunters Point Avenue, Court Square and Queens Plaza. The other route is between Queensboro Plaza and 74th Street-Broadway, making stops at 33rd Street, 40th Street, 46th Street, 61st Street and 69th Street.

Extra service will be provided on the E line between Manhattan and Queens with trains running every five minutes. Customers travelling to and from Flushing, Corona, Elmhurst and Jackson Heights are strongly encouraged to use this extra service as an alternative.

“When completed, this work will result in a more reliable subway line with the ability to run more trains and improve performance for growing neighborhoods in Queens,” Bianco said.
