Where in Queens connects people to services

Queens got connected.

A new cell phone application known as “Where in Queens” will help Queens Library users connect to the social services closest to where they live.

A similar system was put into place originally in San Francisco.

In fact, the West Coast app creator donated the framework to the Queens Library in order to serve the community.

“Mobile phones have really done a great job of democratizing technology and as most of us can attest, it has become a piece of technology many of us can’t live without,” said Mikkel Svane, founder and CEO of Zendesk, the company that donated the software.

The app will refer social services users to public, faith-based and community services, including emergency housing, food pantries, legal assistance, healthcare and education.

“Queens Library is pleased to put such valuable information directly into the hands of Queens’s residents,” said Bridget Quinn-Carey, Queens Library’s interim president and CEO. “Users can access the same information on the web or by coming in to the library, but the availability of ‘Where in Queens’ as a mobile website makes it available during more hours and in more places.”
