U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced that the federal government will provide $886 million to repair damage to East River tunnels caused by Hurricane Sandy.

The federal money will go to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to restore the Greenport, Steinway and Montague subway tunnels, all heavily damaged when Sandy struck at the end of October 2012.

The Steinway tunnel is used by the No. 7 train, and the G train travels through the Greenport tunnel.

The damage to the Montague tunnel, which is used by the R train, knocked out subway service for 14 months.

The money is part of a total of $3.798 billion in federal money for repairing damage from Sandy.
