Mark Weprin leaves City Council to join governor’s staff

By Eric Jankiewicz

City Councilman Mark Weprin (D- Oakland Gardens) is stepping down from his position to join Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s staff, he announced in an emailed statement on Monday.

Weprin has served as a councilman since 2010 and before that he was an Assembly member for 15 years. He will now serve as Cuomo’s deputy secretary of Legislative Affairs, a position that will make him the liaison between Cuomo and the state Legislature and the City Council.

“In the office of Governor Cuomo, I will continue to serve the people of New York,” Weprin said in a statement. “I have known Governor Cuomo for most of my life, and he is a leader of incredible talent. I look forward to this next step in my public service career.”

Weprin currently represents the 23rd Council District, which includes Queens Village, Bellerose, Oakland Gardens, Douglaston and Fresh Meadows. The selection for Weprin’s replacement will have to be held during a special election, which occurs when an official does not fill out the full term. Given Weprin’s two-weeks notice, he will leave his City Council seat after Memorial Day Weekend.
