Unity of police, community is the best policy

By Joe Brook

That the majority of police are “good guys” and should be respected is a no-brainer. They are in a position of power by virtue of their uniforms, and being armed.

However, being disrespected should not be an excuse to use excessive force when unnecessary, or for minor offenses. As it’s been said, “if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen,” or “let the punishment fit the crime.” Acting as one with the community is beneficial to both the police and the community.

The “us against them mind-set” benefits no one. Weeding out rogue cops or those psychologically unfit would help greatly in enhancing the trust and good will between the police and the public.
